What are my responsibilities as a tenant?

As you may or may not be aware, there are responsibilities you have as a tenant to reasonably look after the property and hold up your end of the agreement during the course of your lease.

This generally covers things like;

Keeping the property in a reasonable living standard – Allowing for general wear and tear

Keeping up with the property’s general gardening maintenance

Keeping up with your rent payment obligations

Reporting any needs for repairs or maintenance the property requires

Correctly notifying any changes to your living circumstances, or plans to vacate

Rectifying any damage you, anyone that lives in the house, or your guests cause to the property

Asking for the landlord’s permission and consent before making any changes to the property including alterations and additions

Not using the property contrary to anything permitted in the lease, or for anything illegal

Not interfering or causing disturbance to the comfort of your neighbours

Following the guidelines set out in your lease while also keeping the property in good condition will ultimately benefit everyone.

By keeping up your end of the deal will also help you should there be any issues that come up down the line.

If you’ve done everything requested through the course of the lease and lived up to all or most of the requirements, when you make minor or, reasonable requests, in most situations it should put you in a much better position for the landlord to comply.
